Looking Ahead: Slackware 11

Crossposted from Slackware Blog.

Well, we’re getting closer to a Slackware 11 release. What kind of software goodies can we expect from this release? On May 31st, KDE released KDE 3.5.3, which has since been included in slackware-current. Unless KDE makes another release soon, I expect we’ll see KDE 3.5.3 included in Slackware 11.

Slackware 11 is still using a 2.4 kernel by default, with the 2.6.16.20 kernel in “testing”. Chess Griffin is guessing Slackware 11 will be released on June 25th. I don’t think that’s gonna happen, but Chess made that guess back in May. I am guessing that Slackware 11 will be released around August 11th. I say that because we haven’t even seen Slackware 11 Beta 1 yet.

I would expect to see a 2.6 kernel as the default kernel in Slackware 11. Having a 2.4 kernel as the default is something people like to poke fun at Slackware for. Now that kernel 2.6 has been around for a few years, I expect Patrick will set it as the default. Patrick will make the right decision, as he always has, no matter which kernel he chooses to set as the default.

Other new software that will be included in Slackware 11 is MySQL 5.0, Apache 1.3.36, PHP 4.4.2, Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4, Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.4, and X11 6.9.0. Now, this is software that’s currently included in slackware-current, so the version numbers may change slightly before Slackware 11 is actually released.

So far, it looks like we can expect a nicely polished release of Slackware 11, as usual. I’m just hoping Patrick decides to go with a 2.6 kernel by default.

On a somewhat releated note, this guy here at wordpress.com seems to be addicted to his Slackware box. Apparently it’s caused him to miss a few lunches, he’s having trouble dragging himself away from the beauty that is Slackware.

Somebody should drag me away from my PC. Ever since I installed Slackware on it, I could not get myself to stay away from the damn thing. My eyes are hurting, and my stomach is grumbling from missed lunches.

No Windows Vista Rewrite

Some news place in Australia claimed an inside source at Microsoft told them 60% of the existing Windows Vista code would have to be rewritten. This news had the techie bloggers pretty excited today.

Up to 60% of the code in the new consumer version of Microsoft new Vista operating system is set to be rewritten as the Company “scrambles” to fix internal problems a Microsoft insider has confirmed to SHN.

Alec Saunders brings the obvious to light in his post. The “obvious” of course being the logistics of such a project.

What utter crap! 60% of Windows is millions and millions of lines of code. You can’t rewrite that much code, and ship in January. Maybe January 2009 if a 60% rewrite is needed, but not January 2007. Perhaps Microsoft is in denial, and Vista will never ship, or perhaps reporter Dave Richards is a tad too quick to jump on “the sky is falling” bandwagon.

There’s absolutely no way in hell they could ship Vista by Jan 2007 if they had to do 60% of the code again. They probably should do it though, just base it off Linux or BSD and they’d be good. heh.

Microsofts Robert Scoble
says the 60% code rewrite claims are bogus. Thank you Robert, my mind is at ease.

Quick and Easy Remote Backups

I backup my database, website, and my home directory on a daily basis to a remote server via SSH and rsync. Rsync is a tool that synchronizes directories. I also use it for grabbing current copies of slackware-10.1 and slackware-current.

It’s really easy to backup files to a remote server with these tools. I create tar archives of my needed directories and store the current ones in /opt/backups. I’ve made various bash scripts to do this on a daily basis for me automatically. After that’s complete, the code shown below is run. It transfers my /opt/backups directory to the remote server. It’s path on the remote server would be /home/tyler/backups. All you need to do is set the SERVER varaible to the hostname of the server you’re backing up to.

#!/bin/sh
SERVER=backup.server.com
rsync -avz --partial --delete --bwlimit=25 --progress --stats -e ssh \
/opt/backups tyler@$SERVER:/home/tyler/

The hardest part is finding a remote server that you’re able to backup to. If you’re lucky, your web host will allow you SSH access. There’s no need for the server end to have rsync installed. All it needs is SSH. I know BlueHost gives account holders SSH access. They’ve been hosting our sites at work for a while now and promptly gave me an SSH account. Their sites said they’d need an ID, but they didn’t require one from me for one reason or another. I backup to a freinds Linux box that’s located in a datacenter somewhere.

Misc.

It looks like the grsecurity kernel patch is back for a while…they ended up pulling in a few sponsors. It made me feel good to see the companies that use grsecurity supply some money so grsecurity can continue to be developed.

Also, I’ve been interviewing for a job at Moms Meals. I originally applied for a managerial position with them, but when I went in for an interview it turned out they needed a computer guy. It sounds like they have some big changes planned for their IT stuff. They talked like they wanna have me be the IT Director for a few months and then later on bring someone else in to be the “real” IT director. The other person would be used for planning and that type of stuff, and my job would then become doing all the programming and system administration. The programming and system administration is something I’d rather do anyway, they better not cut my wages…assuming I get the job. Last time I talked to Ernie, he said he still had to check my references and wanted to get me in there ASAP.

DJ Pi should be releasing Trance Empire Vol 9 sometime this week. Again, he’s just waiting for the cover art to get finished up. The Dj Pi website (www.djpi.net) is having some trouble with the forum. Since I moved the forum from my server to the actual djpi.net server, the forum’s mail functions have stopped working. So, we can’t send e-mail through the forum anymore. The company that hosts djpi.net is starting to really irritate me. They NEVER reply to any of my support e-mails.
