Woodward Apologizes, Cheney Speaks

This is just getting silly now. I say just quit now and forget anything ever happened. There will be no end, there will be no conclusion. There’ll always be someone who’s not talking. Bob Woodward says he knew of Valerie Plame a month before Libby supposedly leaked her identity. It’s kinda hard for Libby to be the source of the leak when others knew of it before he had a chance to “leak.”

Bob Woodward apologized to The Washington Post yesterday for failing to reveal for more than two years that a senior Bush administration official had told him about CIA operative Valerie Plame, even as an investigation of who disclosed her identity mushroomed into a national scandal.

Woodward, an assistant managing editor and best-selling author, said he told Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr. that he held back the information because he was worried about being subpoenaed by Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the special counsel leading the investigation.

“I apologized because I should have told him about this much sooner,” Woodward, who testified in the CIA leak investigation Monday, said in an interview. “I explained in detail that I was trying to protect my sources. That’s job number one in a case like this.”

No shit ya shoulda spoke up earlier. I can understand where he’s coming from though. I can’t say that I’d be too enthused about revealing new information in an investigation of that magnitude. I’d probably keep my mouth shut too, but this isn’t about me. Scott at ScrappleFace thinks special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald may be close to discovering who told Valerie Plame that she was an undercover CIA agent. Could it be Woodward? Sure, I don’t see why not. heh.

Don Surber is happy to see Dick Cheney speak out against the various lies about the Bush administration produced by those mostly in the democratic party. It’s definately a good thing to see. If I were in control I’d be out there blasting these guys all the time, Bush and Cheney have been too quiet until recently. From Don Surber:

Sixty years ago, such a speech would not be necessary. People understood the need to put partisanship aside and to rally behind our troops. In Vietnam, I was told by many that they would support the military if our nation were ever attacked.
That too has now been proved to be a lie.

Reuters via Yahoo News on Cheney’s speech:

“The president and I cannot prevent certain politicians from losing their memory, or their backbone — but we’re not going to sit by and let them rewrite history,” said Cheney, a principal architect of the war and a focus of Democratic allegations the administration misrepresented intelligence on Iraq’s weapons program.

Cheney said the suggestion Bush or any member of the administration misled Americans before the war “is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city.”

“Some of the most irresponsible comments have, of course, come from politicians who actually voted in favor of authorizing force against
Saddam Hussein,” he said in a speech to the conservative Frontiers of Freedom Institute.

Way to go Mr. Vice President. Get right at the heart of the matter and try not to offend anyone. The Washington Post has a little on the speech by Cheney now too.

War, Not Candyland

Some Republican senators are calling “for Iraqi forces to take the lead next year in securing the nation and for the Bush administration to lay out its strategy for ending the war.” WHAT!?!

WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 - In a sign of increasing unease among Congressional Republicans over the war in Iraq, the Senate is to consider on Tuesday a Republican proposal that calls for Iraqi forces to take the lead next year in securing the nation and for the Bush administration to lay out its strategy for ending the war.

The Senate is also scheduled to vote Tuesday on a compromise, announced Monday night, that would allow terror detainees some access to federal courts. The Senate had voted last week to prohibit those being held from challenging their detentions in federal court, despite a Supreme Court ruling to the contrary.

Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who is the author of the initial plan, said Monday that he had negotiated a compromise that would allow detainees at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, to challenge their designation as enemy combatants in federal courts and also allow automatic appeals of any convictions handed down by the military where detainees receive prison terms of 10 years or more or a death sentence.

Well, it just doesn’t get any stupider than that. Why do we need legislation to tell the Iraqis what to do? Bush laying out the stragety is just retarted anyway. I mean, sure, a general overview is nice and has been given time and time again without much notice from those who should take notice.

It seems like congress is all about letting our enemy get one up on us. You don’t tell your enemy what your plans are in a war, that’s just how it works. Do they expect our enemy not to act on this information? “Now, we’re going to set a withdrawl strategy, but you can’t use this information against us.” I don’t think that’ll work, though they may believe that’s how it’ll work. Since when are our senators flat out pussies willing to cop-out so easily? And those detainees are not american citizens. They should not be allowed access to our federal court system. They should be held until it’s proven they hold no threat the the U.S. and our allies. We’re at war, this isn’t a fucking game of candyland.

Scott at ScrappleFace feels basically the same way. Zarqawi is gonna be happy about this! Scott is right, I mean, we might as well ask for Zarqawi’s input on this. While we’re at it we should probably just let the paris riots continue un-hindered. What do we gotta lose?

Others blogging include Michelle Malkin, Right Wing Nuthouse and Hugh Hewitt. Donklephant says this is a good thing, basically how Kerry said he would have handled the situation, minus the U.N. and quarterly senate reports. I’m all for letting the Iraqi citizens take total control of their country, just not yet. We have to make sure they’re 100% ready or we’ll be right back in the same place we were 5 years ago. We’ve started down this line and we need to follow through, there’s no going back.

UPDATE: Looks like Bush won’t be forced to divulge future war plans. Instead, 2006 “should be a period of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty.” From the AP via Yahoo News:

On the question of a timetable for troop withdrawal, senators rejected the Democrats’ proposal by 58-40. Democratic leaders had advanced the measure in the wake of declining public support for a conflict that has claimed more than 2,000 U.S. lives and cost more than $200 billion.

Republicans countered with their own nonbinding alternative that the Senate approved on a 79-19 vote. Five Democrats sided with the majority party.

Instead of calling for a withdrawal timetable, the GOP provision urged that 2006 “should be a period of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty,” with Iraqi forces taking the lead in providing security to create the conditions for the phased redeployment of United States forces.

Best. Death Party. Ever.

I wrote a few days ago about Cindy Sheehan preparing to tie herself to a fence once the 2000th soldier in Iraq had died. Well, didn’t go exactly as she planned it would seem. The Political Pitbull has some pictures of lonely Cindy just sitting there playin with her blackberry. Sure doesn’t look like her 2000 deaths party was much of a success…

The hippies in San Fran seem to have had better success, if nothing else they had a good time. Really, go look at them. It looks like the set of a Cheech and Chong movie. Or as Ace puts it, “a tailgate party outside a fucking Phish concert.”

The Indepundit has a link to The Everlasting Phelps, who asks if you can tell the difference between these hippies in San Fran and partying White Sox fans. I sure can’t, there’s something seriously wrong there.

Thanks Basil, Don Surber, The Jawa Report, Mudville Gazette, The Blue State Conservatives, and Stop the ACLU for providing me with much needed linkage. I don’t think I’d see much traffic were it not for those kind people…

Scooter Libby Not So “Lucky”

The NYT is reporting that Karl Rove, Bush’s deputy chief of staff and a senior advisor, won’t be indicted in the Plame case. He will remain under investigation though, lucky him.

Sooter Libby Jr., Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, will be indicted on charges of “making false statements to the grand jury in the C.I.A. leak inquiry”.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27 - Lawyers in the C.I.A. leak case said Thursday that they expected I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, to be indicted on Friday, charged with making false statements to the grand jury.

Karl Rove, President Bush’s senior adviser and deputy chief of staff, will not be charged on Friday, but will remain under investigation, people briefed officially about the case said. As a result, they said, the special counsel in the case, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, was likely to extend the term of the federal grand jury beyond its scheduled expiration on Friday.

As rumors coursed through the capital, Mr. Fitzgerald gave no public signal of how he intended to proceed, further intensifying the anxiety that has gripped the White House and left partisans on both sides of the political aisle holding their breath.

Being indicted doesn’t mean guilty. Basically, the prosecutors feel they’ve got enough on Libby to link him to crimes he’s suspected of commiting. They just need more time before they’re confident enough in their evidence to indict Rove.

None of this is even known to be 100% true yet. It sounds very plausible though, along with a few thousand other possibilities. I almost hope it goes down that way. I expect aggression and general outrage from left leaning bloggers if Rove does “get lucky” and comes out still under investigation. Should be a good time.

UPDATE 1: ABC news has picked this up now too. h/t Dan @ Riehl World View.

UPDATE 2: NBC News is confirming (along with WaPo now) that Libby will be indicted today while Rove will remain under investigation. h/t Real Teen.

James Joyner of OTB notices that most news sources are reporting on the non-indictment of Rove rather than the indicement of Libby. Sounds like the liberal media trying to ruffle feathers again. Conservative Cat gets serious about Plamegate and looks at how cats would make better military leaders than humans, sort of.

UPDATE 3: I caught Patrick Fitzgerald explaining all the charges in a press conference while I was at lunch. The Political Teen has the video. I think Fitzgerald did a nice job explaining everything and why Libby is being indicted. The Q&A was basically worthless, Fitzy didn’t really answer much. It’s not his fault reporters ask questions they already know the answers to though, or non-answers in this case.

And Bush is supposed to speak about the Libby indictment at 3:50 PM ET. So in like 2 minutes.

Miers Withdrawls

Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to the Supreme Court this morning. No doubt lots of people from both sides of center will be pleased with this news. I personally didn’t have an opinion one way or the other about Miers. She probably could have done a very good job filling the open SCOTUS seat. From the Washington Post:

Harriet Miers withdrew this morning as a nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court.

In announcing the decision, Miers and President Bush cited their concern with the requests of members of the Senate Judiciary Committee for documents dealing with her work as White House Counsel that the administration has chosen to withhold as privileged.

But the Miers nomination to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was in deep trouble, with little support in the Senate, open criticism from many Senators of both parties, and an outpouring of opposition from conservative activists and intellectuals.

Miers told the president in a letter of withdrawal that she was “concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and our staff that is not in the best interests of the country.”

Bush responded that he was “reluctantly” accepting the decision.

In the long run, it’s probably good she withdrew. She was obviously someone that not many people seemed to be able to agree with on any issue. She caused enough controversy just being herself, not sure she’d work out so well had she gotten the job. Michelle Malkin, Outside The Beltway, and SCOTUSblog have more.

USA Today Wordplay

These blatantly photoshopped images coming from various sources in The Media amaze me. They may truly just be mistakes, but there should still be at least some quality control. This immediately reminded me of the Reuters “potty break” image.

This isn’t about Bush though, this one’s all Condi. This photo of Condoleezza Rice was published last week by USA Today.
Doctored Condi

And then we have the original, which is now the image being shown on the USA Today link above.
Original Condi

I just want to know why. Why are photos that are obviously inaccurate being published by members of the MSM? Are they just having trouble finding employees that have even 20 minutes of experience with Photoshop or Gimp? Is there some breakdown in the editing process or are some editors just willing to let this stuff slide provided they get the necessary kick-backs?

USA Today did include an editors note commenting on the photo. I never realized when resizing a persons photo their eyes will become possessed looking. I’ll have to watch out for that phenomenon next time I’m touching up a picture to be printed. Here’s the editors note.

Editor’s note: The photo of Condoleezza Rice that originally accompanied this story was altered in a manner that did not meet USA TODAY’s editorial standards. The photo has been replaced by a properly adjusted copy. Photos published online are routinely cropped for size and adjusted for brightness and sharpness to optimize their appearance. In this case, after sharpening the photo for clarity, the editor brightened a portion of Rice’s face, giving her eyes an unnatural appearance. This resulted in a distortion of the original not in keeping with our editorial standards.

So, the editor brightened a portion of Rice’s face. I haven’t looked in-depth at the photos, but after studying for a few minutes the brightness around her cheeks and forehead in the original doesn’t look much different from the brightness in the poorly edited photo. While there’s a very distinct difference in the brightness of her eyes. Check out FromThePen for some more on that.

At least they’re acknowledging that they fucked up. I still don’t see the reason for all the word play in the editors note. Michelle Malkin has a good round-up.
