Trackerless BitTorrent

Saw this via the Broadband Blog this morning. I downloaded the new beta bittorrent client yesterday, compiled it, and it failed horribly. Dunno know why as I didn’t research it much.

Anyway, here’s the news as reported by Om Malik.

itTorrent’s new version is easier, better and well simpler. In other words, it is trackerless which essentially means “that anyone with a website and an Internet connection can host a BitTorrent download.” The torrent tracking tasks instead of the server, are now off loaded to the client. Downside, well not for users, for MPAA maybe. Many times downloads can kill you with high bandwidth bills. However with the new version, well website operators can simply use the efficient download paradigm of Bit Torrent and can get “broadcast TV” economics working for them.

This looks pretty neat. Previously, you’d have to use a tracker to distribute your files, which was kinda confusing to users. This new trackerless BT is more confusing to me than the previous tracker versions. Trackers are still supported in the newer versions. You can get new releases of BitTorrent from BitTorrent.com.

Tvtorrents

I like TV. I especially like King of the Hill, the Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy. TVtorrents.tv, a site that indexed a whole bunch of TV episodes has gone offline for good. There’s a message on their home page about the closing. They indicate there’s some sort of legal action being taken against them.

The site has had lots of problems in the past. There were week long periods of downtime due to server issues and domains expiring. I’m sad to see the site go.

Comcast Sued for RIAA Cooperation

That’s right. Comcast has been used for disclosing customer information to the RIAA. I’m very interested to see how this turns out. I love hearing stories where ISP’s refuse to give the RIAA or MPAA any customer information. I wish all companies would take a stance like that.

Supposedly, no court authorized Comcast to give away personal information about their customers. I doubt a court would need to have a say in it though as copyright infringement was taking place.

The Pirate Bay

The Pirate Bay is some bit torrent site based in Sweden. They get a bunch of legal threats via e-mail from various companies and organizations seeking to have their copyrighted materials removed from The Pirate Bay.

The e-mails are hilarious to read. Especially the replies sent by the guys that run The Pirate Bay. I won’t write too much more about this, but you should really checkout their legal threats page. Very funny and entertaining.

New Year

Yay! It’s 2005. I didn’t do anything too special for the new year.

It rained ice most of the morning here today. It was great. We’re supposedly gonna get 10-12″ of snow tuesday through wednesday this week. I dunno if I believe it though, the weather people here seem to be off lately.

Work is crazy. Now that we’re through the holiday season, people are starting their diets up again. Which is good news for us, nevermind the huge influx of orders catching us a little off-guard.

No-ip’s service is again restored. They were experiencing some sort of DoS attack that knocked down their mail servers for a while yesterday.

Demonoid.com is gone for good everyone. I wasn’t a user of the site. It sucked in my opinion. Suprnova is releasing eXeem soon, their new software. It’s some sort of mesh between BitTorrent and Kazaa I’m afraid. I dun expect I’ll like it too well…

MPAA

They’ve got a little bit of a problem on their hands. Namely with the Bittorrent community. They are bringing lawsuits against operators of sites such as Torrentbits.org, Demonoid.com, and Suprnova.org. What they fail to understand, is none of their movies are actually on any of those servers.

All these websites have/had disclaimers explaining that there’s not actually any copyrighted materials stored on their servers. Just meta files that can fetch the copyrighted material for you, via BitTorrent.

These lawsuits greatly disturb me since the site operators aren’t doing anything illegal. They do make it easier for people to find what they’re looking for, but the individuals downloading the copyrighted material are the one who should be sued, not the site operators.

Below are some links to letters from the MPAA to the demonoid.com hosting provider. If I was a hosting company, there’s no way I’d turn over the info the MPAA is requesting.

Anyway, here’s links to copies of the letters:
