WordPress Plugin: Thumbnail Viewer 1.0

1.0 is old, go get the newest.

Thumbnail Viewer is my first WordPress plugin to be released to the public. I used the WordPress Lightbox 2 plugin as a starting point and implemented CSS and Javascript from the Image Thumbnail Viewer from Dynamic Drive. There’s another WordPress plugin based on the same code from Dynamic Drive, but it doesn’t have a quicktag to automatically add the code to your posts/pages. The “loading” image and text also seems to be broken in that other plugin.

The Thumbnail Viewer plugin is simply used to overlay images on a page, similar to Lightbox JS. Click on the images below to see the Thumbnail Viewer plugin in action.

Here’s a description of the Image Thumbnail Viewer from Dynamic Drive, the code this plugin is based on:

Image Thumbnail Viewer is a compact, unobtrusive image viewer that can be applied to any link on the page to load the desired image inside a sleek interface based on the link’s “href” value. Simply give the link in question- be it a text link or image thumbnail link- a rel attribute of “thumbnail”, and you’re done.

This script will center the enlarged image on the page and optionally display a text description based on the activating link’s “title” attribute. A fading effect can be turned on/off to bring the final image into view.

1.0 is old, go get the newest.

Installation

  1. Extract wp-thumbnailviewer folder from .zip to wp-contents/plugins/.
  2. Go to Plugins in WordPress dashboard and activate Thumbnail Viewer.
  3. That’s it! Write a new post to use the quicktag button or simply add rel=thumbnail to any link tag.

Functionality in IE7 is broken (sometimes) in 1.0. The div to display the full image works in some IE7 installs but doesn’t work in others. Will be fixed for 1.1.

I will be creating a page dedicated to this plugin in the near future, it will house all information related to this plugin. Please, give it a try and let me know how it works out for you. Any feedback is always appreciated. If you decide to use this plugin and have any questions or problems, please leave a comment.

Dreamhost is really starting to piss me off. Speeds are fine at night, around 1:00 AM, but usage is fairly low then. I’m really at a loss as to what to do next. They’ve already moved me to a faster server, one with far fewer sites being hosted on it.

I think this site was faster when I was hosting it out of my house. I need to work on purchasing a datacenter…

Cool plugin! I’m going to incorporate it to use my BLaugh sidebar on my blog. Oh, and if you don’t like Dreamhost you could try ICDSoft. I’ve been using them for over three years now and they just keep giving me more and more features for no extra cost or at reduced cost. Originally in 2003, it cost me $76.40 for a year and I got 300 Mb of space, 1 MySQL DB, 4 subdomains, 8 GB of throughput, 5 ftp accounts, 10 mailing lists and 3 parked domains, plus my domain name. In 2006 I re-upped with for $72 and I got 1 GB of space, 10 MySQL DB, 15 subdomains, 20 GB throughput, 15 ftp accounts, 30 mailing lists and 5 parked domains. I get as many mailboxes as the size will allow - pretty much unlimited; and I do NOT have to place any ads on any site on my space. The customer support is great (I usually get at least an email reply within 5 minutes) and excellent uptimes. The only time it’s been down in the three plus years I’ve had it was just this month when a construction crew’s back hoe took out the datacenter’s trunk line (along with the trunk lines of a few other companies). The datacenter is in Boston and the incident made national news. Sorry for sounding like a commercial.

sevenumber: Shouldn’t be a problem. As long as you’re able to modify the generated link to include rel=”thumbnail” you should be set. Take a look at the HTML I used to generate the example on this page.

Let me know if you’ve got any more questions or need more assistance.

I like it… it will help keep this in order and not clutter up the page like so many large images do on blogs.. this is really good. Thanks

I think a balance between Marketplace and your own site will be the key. But no details about WP Marketplace have been revealed yet? So it might not even be possible to link back to your site
