Washington Post Gets Red

2

The ever-liberal Washington Post is starting up a new blog. The blog is named Red America and is being run by Ben Domenech, co-founder of RedState.

The launch of this new blog has apparently upset some liberals. Not sure why, I thought these types were all about “letting people choose” and providing un-biased information. I guess that only applies to media outlets they deem to be “conservative”.

NewsBusters has a nice post concerning the liberal whining. Others blogging on this topic include Protein Wisdom, Donklephant, Decicion ’08, and Wizbang.

I, for one, welcome our new WaPo blog overlords. Oh, and if you want some more info about Ben and his work, check out the first post on Red America.

UPDATE 7:10PM CST:
I found this post at MyDD to be very amusing. Apparently the right-wing blogosphere has been destroyed.

Glenn Reynolds is a columnist for MSNBC. Andrew Sullivan is a columnist for Time. Michelle Malkin is a frequently published columnist in a number of offline outlets. And now, RedState co-founder Ben Domenech has a regular column in the Washington Post.

I might be wrong, but doesn’t that help show how successful the conservative blogosphere has been? I’m pretty sure it does…crazy hippies. Now, I’m a member of the “conservative blogosphere”, and I’ve seen nothing but growth since my arrival. I’m not a big enough creature to matter though, so I guess it sucks to be me? I dunno, dun care.

Hello DreamHost

0

You probably didn’t even notice, but this site is now being hosted at DreamHost. My main purpose for moving is stability. My server at home hasn’t been acting too well lately. When it gets too warm it’ll simply freeze up and will take 20 minutes to come back on. I’m pretty sure it’s a power supply issue. Simple to fix once I find the time to get another PSU.

Anyway, I transferred the domain registration and everything here to DreamHost. I got a wicked good deal. I paid one year in full already and got an 83% discount using the “DHM” dreamhost promo code. Original bill was $119.40, all I had to pay was $29.40.

I really enjoy DreamHost so far. I was able to replicate this whole site here on DreamHost except for the System Status page. It’s a great relief to have this site out of my house. I no longer wish to blatantly ignore the TOS provided by my ISP.

Please, if you notice any problems, get in touch with me.

Here’s Performancing Metrics

0

Performancing, the guys who brought us a great blogging tool for Firefox, have recently launched Performancing Metrics. It’s their new statistics package, designed specifically for blogs. Now, I love Mint, it lets me easily see how many people read posts and all that good stuff. Performancing Metrics basically gives the same types of data, they just have a different (and in my opinion better) method for displaying the data.

Performancing Metrics is still in beta, although they’re still accepting new signups. The service is free and will most likely remain free. In the most recent post at the Performancing blog, they mention they hope to release Performancing Metrics as an Open Source package eventually. That is absolutely, 100%, certified, killer!

About 24 hours after Performancing Metrics launched, 2500 blogs were already being tracked. I think Performancing is really on to something here. They’ve got a very unique interface for displaying all the data. You can even track more than one blog from your Performancing account.

Rather than me going into details, just go to Solution Watch and read what Performancing Metrics has in store for you. They’ve got a really nice write-up along with screenshots. ProBlogger also has an extensive review of Metrics.

WordPress 2.0.2 is out, it’s a security release. Seems to fix some cross site scripting issues. This is from the WordPress development blog:

An important security issue has been brought to the attention of the WordPress team and we have worked diligently to bring you a new stable release that addresses it. Our latest version 2.0.2 contains several bugfixes and security fixes.

The problems addressed are unannounced XSS issues privately discovered and reported to the WordPress team. Thanks to Mark Jaquith, Robert Deaton, and David House for assisting with this release.

There ya have it, go upgrade your installations!

NewsAlloy Update

2

My favorite news/rss reader, NewsAlloy, is undergoing a pretty major update. It’s supposed to be back up sometime tomorrow, if not sooner.

The developer (lordtime) is changing all the MySQL tables over to InnoDB from MyISAM. He’s pretty confident it will result in a decent performance boost. I haven’t had any problems with the speed or performance of NewsAlloy since I started using it.

He also mentions in that post that we can expect a few pleasant surprises after this MySQL update is out of the way. I really love NewsAlloy.
