Roundup

I’ve been hella busy lately. Hence the lack of posting since the weekend. Since time is short, I’ll direct you over to The Jawa Report where Howie has put together a nice summary of news events today. Covering everything from Iraq to Katrina to Able Danger. And a mention of cops (the popo) looting in areas affected by Katrina. Sorry, but that’s just wrong. Those dirty little piggies.

Katrina and the Waves

Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the gulf coast right about now. I awoke this morning and flipped on FoxNews. I looked at the bottom right of the TV to see how the market was doing, horrible. I think the dow was down something like 300 points. Then they said oil passed $70 a barrell.

My car has no gasoline in it. Maybe enough to make it to work and back. Ashley had to be to work early this morning so I didn’t ride with her. To make matters worse, I don’t have any money to get gasoline with. I mean, I have money in my checking account, just no cash on me. And I’ve still got a paycheck to deposit. But, my bank is no longer open on Saturdays. Saturday is the only time I can make it to the bank. So, I’ve gotta find a new bank sometime this week. Walking to work this morning wasn’t so bad.

Katrina is one hell of a storm. It’s spawning tornadoes all over the place. It also seems the SuperDome in New Orleans is failing. A piece of the roof has blown off and the sky can be seen from inside the dome. If I was a reporter, I’d rather be standing in the middle of the street rather than inside the SuperDome.

And supposedly, there’s still 100,000 some people in New Orleans (via Wizbang). What’s worse? Those people will not be able to evacuate the city. This could be very bad if true.

PunditGuy has a massive amount of links and updates on the storm. Blogs of War would also be a good resource for information regarding the hurricane.

In addition to the physical destruction that will come from this storm, there’ll also be financial troubles. It seems that the federal payroll system is run out of New Orleans. It was supposed to be moved to Kansas City, but not until next summer. Government employees may miss a paycheck or two in the coming weeks.

The Weatherblog also notes that some of the pumps in New Orleans aren’t working either. The Philly Inquirer blog is also worth watching.

More Mediacom Goodness

Maybe Mediacom didn’t pay them enough money to rank well, I dunno. I have heard that J.D. Power gives top honors in each class to the company that “donates” the most money to them. That’s not the topic of this post though.

Mediacom recieved the worst customer service rating out of all the cable companies. I am so proud of Mediacom. I’m really getting tired of their crap again. My speeds are great, I’m not complaining about that. TV works great too.

But, remember 90+ days back when I started the Mediacom countdown to the free upgrades? Yah, well the 90 days has come and gone, and there’s still no 10000/1000 package. All we have is 5000/256. A 10/1 package was promised within 90 days. I want to know if they actually expected to be able to hit that 90 day deadline. I mean, it was printed in newspapers all over, saying that a 10/1 package would be available within 90 days. Bullshit. They can’t even provide a steady 5Mbps down to a lot of subscribers.

And we’re still stuck on 256Kbps upload. And they’re supposed to be coming out with phone service (VOIP). Correct me if I’m wrong, but won’t the VOIP suck up almost all of the upload? What happens when you try to surf the internet while on your phone? The sound quality can’t be too great.

There’s rumors going around that Mediacom is moving all of their equipment from analog to digital. This should help. But it doesn’t change that fact that promises were again made and again they weren’t kept.

I just wish they’d be straight with us for once. Although, Marshalltown, in Iowa, is getting a 10Mbps service soon, like within weeks. That package is only going to be $10 more than I’m paying. And I get half the download speed and a quarter of the upload speed. I hope it comes this way soon.

Honestly though, I am very happy with my internet service, although at least 512Kbps upload would be excellent. I do get a steady 5Mbps down at any given time of the day. When I signed up I had 1.5, then got a free upgrade to 3, and another free upgrade to 5. When we got the 3Mbps down upgrade we also got an upload increase to 256Kbps, from 128. All free upgrades, so I’m happy.

The Twelfth Percentile

Only 12% of americans believe pulling out of Iraq would stop terrorist attacks. Personally, I would have thought the number to be higher than that.

Traderrob over at The Jawa Report has all the goods. Wizbang has the same news, but with an update including another poll. The other poll on Wizbang isn’t exactly surprising, if you know someone in Iraq, you’re more likely to support the war.

Looks like Cindy Sheehan doesn’t have the support the media wants us to think she does. These numbers make me happy.

GOP Presidential Straw Poll

Patrick Ruffini has been running a GOP presidential straw poll. With 16539 votes, the results have been calculated. In the lead, with 29.9% is former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani. 26.32% of Iowans voted for Giuliani, out of 95 total Iowans taking the poll.

Lookin at the data, Rudy came out on top in pretty much every state.

Patrick Ruffini has the rest of the results. I won’t bother writing anymore cuz he’s got everything you could want to know about the poll.

Veteran Beating Update

Ace of Spades HQ has an update in the story where those three thugs beat the hell out of those war veterans.

Seems that Rob, over at Say Anything, did a little investigation. He remembered hearing about those street fights people would videotape and then sell. Turns out there’s a company that pays for the movies has a Seattle phone number.

And Rob’s readers have noted that there were two other video cameras being used at the scene. A total of 3 video cameras. Seems highly unlikely there’d be three video cameras watching a spur of the moment fight. Perhaps this was this companies new low budget production?

It’s probably nothing but you never know. It is odd that a company that pays for these street fights has a Seattle number. I just hope they find these guys soon.

I suggest you read what Rob has been doing about this. He’s got a ton of updates.
