DVD Burner

I got a DVD burner yesterday. It’s quite nice. I’ve already been able to free up about 50Gb on one of my hard drives. I got a Sony DRU-800A. Ashley got it for me for my birthday along with a 50 pack of 4.7Gb DVD-R’s.

It’s a lot quicker than I thought it’d be. Only takes about 15-20 minutes to burn a full 4.7Gb DVD. I’d been wanting a DVD burner for a while, thanks to Ashley I got one. I hope she doesn’t attempt to buy me anything else for my birthday, I know she will though.

I also installed Windows Vista lastnight, it sucked. It sucked from what I saw anyway. Display was horrible and for some reason 192.168.1.1 isn’t a “proper” internet gateway address. So I couldn’t even get online to get drivers. I hate it when software tells me something I know isn’t true. My router’s IP is 192.168.1.1, so it IS my god damn gateway address. It was basically just a good reminder as to why I use Slackware.

Oh, below is a picture of the DVD burner.

For archival purposes, it’s important to store CD-R, CR-RW, DVD/R, and DVD/RW discs properly. Since the write process utilizes a dye layer in the media, they can rather quickly deteriorate if exposed to excessive light or heat.

Definately good to know. I’ve got quite a few slim jewel cases laying around somewhere…

I’ll probably pick something else up at Staples or Best Buy sometime too..

Stick them in a drawer or closed box, away from any direct heat source. Darkness and cool are their friends.

I hope the cost of blank DVD’s goes down as much as the cost of blank CD’s did. I go thru them pretty fast (I download DVD’s). And I think I am going to get another DVD burner for my mythtv box.

Forget Vista and stick with Slack, especially since Gnome 2.12 is coming out soon! - http://www.gnome.org/~davyd/gnome-2-12/

Pascal, I saw that yesterday! It’s so awesome! I get so damn excited before a new Gnome release comes out.

Fox, I hope blank DVD prices come down too. I didn’t even seen any dual layer discs at Best Buy. I got a 50-pk of Sony DVD-R’s for about $40. $20 would be great.

    40 US$? That’s nuts. We get a spindle of 50 blanks (DVD, 16x) for 25 Australian dollars. :-D
