Browsers: Fewer Switching

6

Fewer people than expected are actually switching to using something other than Internet Explorer for web browsing. I kept hearing all over the place that Firefox usage would grow to overtake IE. This may still happen, but it’s a long ways off from what I’ve experienced.

This site shows 62% of you are using IE and about 21% are using Firefox. And 59% are running Windows XP, while only 3.4% run Linux. Windows 2000 is second highest at 13.6%.

I suppose the number of IE users isn’t suprising looking at the number of Windows users. About 80% of the people who visit here run some form of Windows. Om Malik’s Broadband Blog elaborates on this topic a little bit more.

I wish I’d see more Firefox users here. I use it as my default browser on Windows and Linux. I can’t believe how much better than IE it is, but some people refuse to switch.

I’ve tried getting people at work to start using FireFox. They’ll use it until I leave the room and then they’re right back with IE. Maybe they just forget how to open FireFox. I mean, I only put an icon on their desktops…

Flickr & F-Spot

0

I finally got F-Spot to work. It was a dependancy problem as it turned out. I missed some errors that were spit out on the console when f-spot was loading my pictures. “Sysetm.DllNotFoundException: libexif.so.10″, that error specifically.

Turns out I had no libexif.so.10 file. Just a libexif.so.12 and libexif.so.9. So, I linked libexif.so.12 to libexif.so.10. Imported my photos back into f-spot and it generated thumbnails perfectly. Absolutely no errors on the console either, which is good. I’m happpy.

F-Spot is pretty awesome. What’s great about it is the fact that it tags your photos. So instead of searching for filenames or some other method, you give tags to your images to find them. Pretty much just like Technorati Tags . Tags are a big part of Flickr too.

Flickr is really sweet too. They’ve got a flash photo manager that’s pretty slick. It makes editing your photos titles, descriptions, and tags really easy. Although I noticed some lag on the actual changes showing up on my photos page.

So far I’ve only played with it for about 20 minutes. F-Spot integrates nicely with Flickr. F-Spot sports the ability to export your photos to Flickr. It even exports your F-Spot tags to Flickr. I haven’t seen any photo management software for Windows as good as F-Spot. I really like it. It’s kick ass it’s a native Gnome app. I believe it’s going to be shipped as a part of Gnome at some point.

Memorial Day Weekend

0

I am so happy it’s finally the weekend. Last week seemed like it drug on forever! Ashley and I don’t really have anything big planned. Her aunt Kyla is coming to town from Boston today. We gotta go meet her at a little local resturaunt soon. She write movie reviews in Boston, so we’ll probably end up going to see a movie sometime.

Lastnight we went to Minskys to have a few drinks with some people from work. I don’t like being around people from work when I’m not at work. All they want to do it talk about work.

Don’t expect to see many posts from me this weekend. I’m not gonna be home very much.

Zarqawi is Dead

0

…maybe. Nobody seems to be sure. Lots of coverage on this as it’s pretty big/good news. It seems al-Zarqawi is dead. Or perhaps he’s severely wounded. Or maybe he’s out playing raquetball wit his homies right now. Whatever the case, something’s up.

His cronies are supposedly fighting over who’s gonna take over command. Some of them claim he’s not been wounded at all and is still leading without problems. I think the guys over at Scared Monkeys have the best summary so far.

Rusty, from The Jawa Report also has good coverage of the story.

I’m not going to bother posting what they already have. In my opinion, he’s dead. Why else would they keep insisting he’s still leading and is just fine? They just dun wanna let on yet that he’s gone. Some sort of propoganda I suppose, dunno how it’s supposed to effect the good guys.

Go read it at Scared Monkeys or read at The Jawa Report. Whichever you choose, you’ll get a nice rounded feel for the situation.

Aussie Convicted for Pot Possession

6

This is pretty outrageous. An Australian girl, Schapelle Corby, has been convicted of possession of marijuana and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison…in Indonesia. I’ve never been to prison or even jail, but I’d guess a place like Indonesia is the last place you’d wanna be imprisoned.

B.L. Ochman’s Blog had some interesting things to say. Apparently the trial was even blogged live by a news service in Australia.

It outrages me that this girl gets 20 years for pot possession and the Bali nightclub bomber got 30 months. And he killed around 200 people.

Here’s a link to the story at news.com.au. It’s pretty sad.
Yeah!
